Hey Sippers,

Anthony Rizzo and Jake Arrieta helped the Chicago Cubs end a 108-year championship drought in 2016. On Sunday the two former Cubs ran the Chicago Marathon in bibs reading 44-16 and 49-16: their old jersey numbers, plus the year. Both finished all 26.2 miles for the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, which supports kids with cancer.

Cleveland rocks back. The Guardians beat the White Sox 2-0 in Game 5 on Saturday, becoming the first team since the 2017 Yankees to win a Division Series after losing the first two games. José Ramírez drove in both runs with one swing, on a pitch 8.88 inches off the ground.

Sooner rather than later. Oklahoma beat No. 1 Texas 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl when kicker Tate Sandell hit a 47-yarder as time expired. The Sooners outgained 382-238 and still won.

Expansion pack. The Golden State Valkyries, in only their second season, swept the defending-champion Las Vegas Aces on Friday and reached the WNBA Finals faster than any expansion team before them. The Atlanta Dream, who swept their semifinal too, are waiting on Saturday.

Washington had a kicker who was perfect all day and 12 seconds to use him. The clock got there first.

Clock-blocked. With about 12 seconds left in overtime on Sunday, the Washington Commanders sat on the New York Giants’ 24-yard line with no timeouts. Quarterback Jayden Daniels scrambled for no gain, and time ran out before anyone could spike the ball, let alone kick it.

Tied up in knots. Regular-season overtime in the NFL lasts 10 minutes, and if nobody has won by then, the game ends in a tie. This one went down 27-27.

Wrong leg to worry about. Washington’s kicker had made both of his tries, from 28 and 40 yards. The shaky leg belonged to the Giants’ rookie, Dominic Zvada, who missed three of five. Daniels took the blame, saying the right call was to “go clock it early and don’t put ourselves in that spot.”

Magic, unamused. Magic Johnson, the Lakers legend who owns part of the Commanders, posted on X: “All we had to do was kick the field goal, and we would have won the game!”

Half-baked. The NFL counts a tie as half a win, so Washington is 1-3-1. Half a win sounds generous until you remember the perfect kicker watched the whole thing from the sideline.

Last call. Friday’s pick, 49ers at Seahawks, went to San Francisco 32-29, keeping the Niners unbeaten at 5-0. Eddy Piñeiro’s late 44-yard field goal made the difference, and Seattle’s last fourth down died a yard short.

Run it back. Tonight it’s the Buffalo Bills at the Los Angeles Rams. Their last meeting in LA, in 2024, ended 44-42 Rams, with 902 yards between the two offenses.
